The top 5 reasons why you need an electric car charger for home
Electric cars are becoming more popular – in fact EV ownership has risen to around 20% in 2021 according to Wired (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/electric-cars-uk-buying-guide) – and for good reason. As well as the environmental benefits there are now many practical benefits to owning an electric vehicle too.
If you own an electric car or plug-in hybrid (or are thinking of buying one), it's important to have a home charger. The good news is we've compiled the top 5 reasons why you need one (thank us later)! From family friendly ones like not having to wait for your turn at the charging station, to practical ones like not having to worry about running out of charge on your way home from work. Read on for more details about these benefits and others that will make owning an electric car even more enjoyable.
1. If your car is electric, you need a charger at home
Whether your car is full electric or a plug-in hybrid, you really can’t beat the convenience, and peace of mind, of having a charger at home. You may read about ‘range anxiety’ when it comes to electric vehicles. Well you can beat that anxiety with a home charger – there’s no journey to the public charging station only to find it’s out of order (yes, we’ve all been there). No waiting for other cars to finish charging before you can connect. No sitting in the car for hours while you get a full tank.
A home EV charger gives you the freedom to charge whenever you like – and that means you can keep it regularly topped up – so you’re always maintaining the cars longest possible range – a sure fire way to enjoy peace of mind as you go about your daily commute.
2. Electric cars are more environmentally friendly than diesel and petrol
It’s an obvious one, isn’t it? But electric vehicles are certainly better for the environment and our health. According to recent research the BBC reported that idling petrol and diesel engines cause significant concentrations of pollutants that affect our health, and particularly the health of vulnerable and young people (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-47525885).
Electric vehicles by their nature have no emissions and plug-in hybrids are many times less polluting than their traditional petrol and diesel counterparts. As people such as, David Attenborough, and others point to the damaging affects of global warming electric cars are becoming a key part in the battle stop the rising global temperatures.
3. Charging your car's battery at home saves money on fuel and eliminates the need to top up at a service station or public charging station.
One of the barriers to electric car ownership is cost, but as the vehicles become more popular prices are coming down, and a home ev charger can give a significant cost reduction over the vehicle’s lifetime versus rising prices at the fuel pumps and even public charging stations.
Home charging your vehicle means that you can benefit from cheaper electricity rates, in fact some energy companies (e.g. EDF Energy) are offering specific EV tariffs (https://www.edfenergy.com/electric-cars/tariffs) where you can use cheaper electricity overnight to charge. An EV charger installed at home also means less trips out to the public stations, which often means further expenditure as you buy other goods at the service station as you wait for the vehicle to charge.
4. It's easy - plug in before going to bed or when you leave for work in the morning and take it with you!
We can’t stress enough the convenience of having a home electric car charger – no more trips to top up – park your car, plugin to your home charging point – we recommend the Rolec car charging points (https://www.aspectenergymanagement.co.uk/car-charging) – sit back and relax as your car gets topped up while you watch Corrie (if that’s your thing).
Home charging also means you can leave your car on charge overnight, safely at your home, knowing that you’ll wake to a full charge ready to take you to wherever you need to go. And the best bit, these smart EV charging devices will switch off when your batteries full – so there’s no wasting electricity or worrying about overcharge.
5. You'll never have to worry about running out of power while driving again
We spoke early about the dreaded ‘range anxiety’ and the range of electric cars is getting better. If you’re the owner of a plug-in hybrid you’ll know that you’re benefiting from improved efficiency and the environmental benefits while having the backup of a traditional combustion engine if you’re heading out for particularly long journeys.
A home charger does give that extra security that, so long as you stay within the manufacturers recommended range, you’ll always have a ‘full tank’ to see you through. You might think ‘what about free electric car charging points, aren’t they as good?’ Well, no, not in our experience – ‘free’ generally means your parking up in a supermarket car park, and even then you have to go through the hassle of downloading the app – and if you do get the charger working – you’ll probably pop in to buy some goods – plus you have to value your own time. When it comes down to it free ev charging points aren’t that ‘free’!
Oh… and here’s a bonus reason number 6 (we know, we’re too good to you)!
